Kyushu (九州) – the name literally means "nine provinces," and it's Japan's third-largest island, sitting pretty southwest of the main island Honshu. This place is special. It's often called the cradle of Japanese civilization, and honestly, once you've been here, you'll understand why.
The island is split into seven modern prefectures – Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Oita, Miyazaki, Kagoshima – plus Okinawa, which is often grouped in as the honorary eighth. Each one has its own personality, its own food obsessions, its own slice of volcanic landscape. Speaking of volcanoes – Kyushu is bubbling with them. That means onsens everywhere. Beppu alone has more hot spring water than anywhere else in Japan.
History buffs? You'll find ancient shrines, samurai legacies, and even a hidden Christian past in Nagasaki. Food lovers?
