This isn’t a restaurant guide. It’s a personal journey through the meals that became moments: the chirashidon that greeted us on our first day, the yatai where we laughed late into the night, the ryokan feast that felt like art, and the simple bowl of corn that taught me about kindness.
It's my first roadside station meal in Japan, and surprisingly, it was in Eastern Hokkaido, of all places. I’d learned that Japanese michi no eki often hide serious culinary treasures, and this chirashidon proved it. A bowl of rice topped with glistening slices of raw seafood – salmon, scallop, maybe even some local crab – so fresh it seemed to hum. I ate it slowly, savouring each piece, feeling the cool air of Hokkaido mix with the warmth of the bowl, still in awe at its affordability compared to Malaysia that would easily charge you double of the value you'd get in Hokkaido.
It was a reminder that sometimes the best meals aren’t in fancy restaurants. They’re where the locals stop, where the ingredients are pulled straight from the sea that morning.
I still recalled the very first evening of my day in Obihiro, where we visited Kitanoyatai before our evening walking tour. I was tired but happy. We’d spent the day learning about local agriculture, and now we were squeezed into a tiny stall called Petit Plaisir. The owner moved with easy confidence, and the tiny space was full of just the members of our group of no more than eight, so the atmosphere was wonderful.
I ordered a bowl of corn, and in a quiet moment, whispered to my friend next to me: “You know what would make this perfect? Melted cheese.”
The owner noticed, and the table then turned my whispers into a lighthearted, wishmaking joke. "That's a genius idea," the owner said, and a minute later, he brought my bowl to the giant cheese wheel near him and shaved a generous melted pile onto my corn. It formed a beautiful layer over the corn so immediately that I forgot to even take a photo, and when I took my first bite, I swear the room went quiet. Sweet, salty, creamy – it was everything I didn’t know I wanted. The beer he poured had a soft foam and no bitterness; I’ve never found that taste anywhere else.
That moment – the cheese, the beer, the laughter – summed up Eastern Hokkaido for me: unexpected, generous, and exactly right.
Tokachi is, undoubtedly, famous for its agriculture, and the winery we visited felt like a celebration of that. The wines were light, fruity, with a distinct sense of place. I’m no connoisseur, but sipping it while looking out over the vineyard, I understood why people travel for this.
Later, at Naitai Terrace, I discovered that Hokkaido’s dairy is justly famous. The soft serve was impossibly creamy, not too sweet, and I ate it watching the sun begin to set. It was the kind of simple pleasure that makes travel feel like a gift. I later also learned about the famous brand Yotsuba sourcing their ingredients from Obihiro itself, and now you know why I'm a big fan of their milk – I love them so much I bought litres of them the moment I saw them being sold in Bukit Bintang's Don Don Donki!
The ryokan at Lake Akan served buffet – offering so much that every bit of seafood, greens, tofu, meat feels amazing. I remembered how a girl skillfully deshelled the crabs for us, the delicate slices of sashimi that would melt me, and the soba noodles that I asked for seconds. We giggled, chattered, and enjoyed the feast.
The dinner at Shiretoko Daiichi hotel too was equally amazing, that I was happily skipping around in joy as I moved to retrieve more food; the kaiseki lunch prior our business meeting was art disguised as food, each plate beautifully arranged, yet fills you just nicely with the sashimi melting upon bite, the soup that warms you after a long day of traveling in the cooling weather – pure luxury in disguise.
But the most memorable bite wasn’t part of the formal meal. It was the bowl of soup the next morning, drunk while gazing out at the lake through the window. Simple, warm, and homey. That soup tasted like the whole trip distilled into one bowl.
Two tastes from the trip remain tangled in my memory. One was the corn with cheese – pure joy, a gift from a watchful chef. The other was whale meat, offered during a meal in Abashiri. I’d never tried it before, and the texture and smell were foreign to me. Pungent, fishy, strong, and much gameier than any ducks I've ever consumed in my life. But our guide explained that it was served with gratitude, as part of a tradition that honours the sea’s gifts, so I still gave it a try.
I took a bite, not because I enjoyed it, but because it felt right to respect the culture and the life it represented. It was a reminder that food isn’t just fuel; it carries history, belief, culture, and connection.
I’ve never found beer that tastes like that first pour in Obihiro. I’ve never found another soft serve that has the exact, perfect creaminess of Naitai Terrace’s soft serve. But I still carry the memory of those meals – the warmth of the yatai, the laughter of new friends, the kindness of a chef who heard a whispered wish.
One day, I’ll go back. I’ll sit at Petit Plaisir again, order the corn, and maybe, if I’m lucky, the owner will remember. The beer will taste different – because I’ll be different. But I hope the feeling of being welcome, of being seen, will still be there.

If Shirakawa-go has a flagship, it is Wada House. Not because it is the most photographed — though it is — but because it tells the fullest story. Built around the late Edo Era (1603–1867) for one of the village’s most influential families, it is the largest gassho-zukuri farmhouse you can enter: four storeys of timber, thatch, and three hundred years of history.
Size is not the only reason to linger here. The Wada family were not just farmers; they were village officials who dealt in saltpeter (煙硝/ensho), a key ingredient for gunpowder. That meant wealth, status, and connections far beyond this mountain valley. In feudal Japan, villages like Shirakawa-go operated with a degree of autonomy, but they still answered to regional lords. The Wada served as village officials (shōya), responsible for tax collection, dispute resolution, and liaison with the samurai class.
Their real influence came from saltpeter (ensho). This mineral, essential for gunpowder, was produced in the region using a traditional method — specifically manufactured in pits under the floorboards by fermenting silkworm waste, mugwort, and soil for three to four years. The Wada family controlled its trade, which brought them wealth and connections far beyond the valley. Gunpowder from Shirakawa-go is said to have been used in conflicts as distant as Edo.
The current house was built around 1800, replacing an earlier structure. It has been in the Wada family continuously — a remarkable 200-plus years — and was opened to the public in 1971 as one of the first farmhouses in the village to welcome visitors. It is now registered as a National Important Cultural Property.
When you stand in the main room, look at the size of the beams and the height of the ceiling. This was not just a home — it was a statement. The Wada were telling everyone who entered: “We matter.” That is something you feel, not just read about.
At four storeys tall, Wada House stands as the largest gassho-zukuri structure in the village. While the family still occupies private residential sections on the first floor, the grand public museum path invites visitors to explore across the first, second, and third vertical levels.
Do not rush through the house and out the door. The garden behind Wada House is worth your time.
Designed in traditional Japanese style, it features a small stream, carefully placed stones, and seasonal plantings. In spring, cherry blossoms and azaleas. In autumn, fiery maples. In winter, the snow-covered garden is serene in a way the main street never is. There is a small bench where you can sit and let the transition from the dim interior to light and greenery happen at its own pace.
From the garden path: Looking back at the estate from the rear walking paths allows you to capture the grand scale of the main thatched roof framed against the mountain peaks without tourist crowds blocking your composition.
The upper floor windows: The wide viewing openings on the second floor face out over the central village paddies. It offers an incredible, unobstructed composition of the iconic thatched rooftops floating over the seasonal rice fields right in the middle of the valley.
No matter when you visit, the house itself remains largely unchanged. That consistency across seasons is part of what makes it worth returning to.
Plan for at least 30–45 minutes to see everything properly — main room, attic climb, exhibition rooms, and the garden at the rear. If you are interested in photography or want to read the displays thoroughly, allow a full hour. It is not a rushed visit.
Right at the 9:00 AM opening or late afternoon after 3:00 PM, to avoid the worst of the tour-group rush. Wada House is busiest between 10:30 AM and 2:00 PM when the majority of day-trip buses arrive from Takayama. The light is also better for interior photography at these shoulder times — natural light enters at a more oblique angle rather than straight overhead, which brings out the texture of the smoke-blackened beams.

Use natural light or increase your ISO — the interior at ISO 1600–3200 in available light produces more atmospheric results anyway. Strollers cannot be wheeled onto the wooden floors and should be left at the designated entrance parking area.
