Tokyo
The city that never finishes revealing itself.
Tokyo (東京, Tōkyō) isn’t just Japan’s capital – it’s a universe unto itself. With over 37 million people, it’s the world’s most populous metropolis, yet it somehow balances neon chaos with quiet temple gardens, futuristic skyscrapers with centuries-old traditions.
Before 1868 it was called Edo, a small castle town that exploded after Tokugawa Ieyasu set up his government here in 1603. Within decades, Edo became one of the largest cities on earth. The Meiji Restoration moved the emperor and capital from Kyoto to Edo, renaming it Tokyo – “Eastern Capital”. Earthquakes and war levelled large parts of it, but Tokyo rebuilt itself into the dazzling, dynamic city we know today.
Now Tokyo offers an almost endless buffet of shopping, entertainment, culture and dining. Districts like Asakusa let you time‑travel to old Japan, while excellent museums, historic temples and peaceful gardens reveal layers of history. And yes, there are plenty of green spaces too – both in the centre and just a short train ride away. This master list gathers all my Tokyo posts in one place.
