Discovering Kira Saga

It was 7:15 PM on a Tuesday with no reservations. We didn't think this through as we were three hungry Malaysians road-tripping through Kyushu. After being turned away from our initial dining choice (because it was closed by the time we arrived after leaving Saga Castle History Museum), we desperately searched for nearby Saga beef restaurants.
Road Trip Tip: Always have backup dining options! When traveling between Kyushu cities, account for delays and restaurant closing times.
Our conversation went like this:
Me: "Girls do we want to indulge in wagyu tonight?"
Friend A: "Let's go!"
Me: "But this restaurant looks like it's gonna be way beyond our budget..."
Friend B: "Swipe the card let's go!"

And that's how we stumbled upon Kira Saga (佐賀牛レストラン 季楽 本店) like hungry zombies. With a 3.63 on Tabelog and over 4 stars on Google Maps, we decided to YOLO our way into this Michelin-starred experience.

The Overachieving Wagyu

Let's get one thing straight – Saga-gyu is the overachieving youngest sibling of Japan's wagyu dynasty. While Kobe beef gets all the fame, Saga beef burst onto the scene in 1988 with incredible standards:
  • Bloodline: Japanese Black × European stock
  • Standard: Beef Marbling Score ≥7/12
  • Diet: Zero-stress pastures with expert-designed meals
The result? Marbling so intricate it's earned its tsuya-sashi ("glossy fat") title - a distinction only 0.5% of Japan's beef achieves. At Kira, our tenderloin resembled cherry blossom petals suspended in snow.

From Appetizers to Dessert

Our dining experience at Kira unfolded like a culinary spectacle:
  • Zensai Moriawase: Four intricate appetizers including squid, duck, and tofu with unbelievable texture
  • Main Event: A5 Saga-gyu showcasing tenderloin and loin cuts
  • Intermezzo: Grilled seasonal vegetables
  • Finale: Dessert of cake and fruits with juice
The staff were incredibly attentive, answering all my questions about the food. When we noticed spiciness in one condiment, they even consulted the chef to confirm chili essence was used!

Teppanyaki Theater

Watching my friends transform our meal into an artistic performance was mesmerizing. The beef? Pure velvet that melted into a symphony of umami. The vegetables were excellent but clearly played second fiddle to the star of the show.
As the meal concluded, we noticed the Michelin plaque - explaining why every detail felt so perfect. The ¥26,400 bill (for three) initially shocked us, but we left with no regrets.
