Hokkaido

Wild coastlines · Drift ice · Ainu legends · The northern frontier

Hokkaido (北海道) – Japan's wild, beautiful northern frontier. From the misty lakes of Kushiro to the drift ice of the Okhotsk Sea, from farm‑fresh harvests in Tokachi to untouched nature in Shiretoko, this island feels like a different country altogether.

This master list follows my Eastern Hokkaido road trip, a journey that took me from Obihiro through Lake Akan, Shiretoko, Abashiri, and all the way to Mombetsu. Along the way I met Ainu storytellers, pulled Japanese yam from the earth, walked where Golden Kamuy was set, and learned about the mysterious drift ice that arrives each winter.

Whether you're planning your own Hokkaido adventure or just dreaming from afar, these posts will give you a taste of its wild heart.
