The Tale of Urashima Taro

The name "Tamatebako" means "treasure box" and comes from a beloved Japanese folktale set in Ibusuki. The story tells of Urashima Taro, a fisherman who saved a turtle and was rewarded with a visit to the underwater Dragon Palace (Ryugyu-jo).

He spent three days with the princess who gifted him a special box, warning him never to open it. When Taro returned home, he discovered 300 years had passed. Overcome with grief, he opened the box, releasing smoke that instantly aged him.
