The Accidental Michelin Discovery

With only sweets for breakfast during our Beppu hot springs adventure, we were starving by lunchtime. Craving the reimen I'd fallen in love with in Morioka, I immediately added Ikkyu no Namida to our itinerary. Only later did I discover this humble shop was Michelin-recognized!
Hot Spring Tip: After soaking in Beppu's therapeutic waters, nothing refreshes like Ikkyu's tangy reimen broth!
Our conversation went like this:
Me: "Who's up for some reimen? Cold noodles in Beppu's autumn?"
Friend B: "But it's freezing! Are you serious?"
Me: "They have warm noodles too! And I hear the kimchi is incredible."
Friend B: "Sold! Let's go!"
Friend A: "Cold stuff are meant to be enjoyed during cold weather, like ice creams!"
Me: "This is why we're friends!"

We arrived to find a queue snaking from the entrance - our first clue this was something special. The simple yet efficient ordering system had us select from the menu outside, where I immediately spotted the large portion option for my post-hike appetite.

The Reimen Revelation

Ikkyu no Namida Reimen
The star of Beppu: Perfectly balanced reimen with kimchi and chaashu

Cold Noodles, Warm Welcome

Stepping inside, we found a cozy, warm space buzzing with energy. The chilled, chewy noodles arrived in a tangy-sweet broth made from:
  • Makurazaki bonito (premium dried fish)
  • Iausu kelp (for umami depth)
  • Beef bones (richness without heaviness)
What sets Ikkyu apart? Zero additives added! The entire bowl is filled with just pure flavors like a gift from nature. The kimchi was so good I ate half straight before mixing it in. The chaashu was lean yet tender - explaining its popularity with health-conscious diners.

Beyond the Noodles

Unexpected Delights

The surprises kept coming:
  • Chicken Tempura: Not your ordinary karaage! Fluffy, light crust with incredibly juicy meat inside
  • Kabosu Pepper: Oita's signature citrus added a fragrant, bright note to the rich broth
  • Warm Option: Perfect for chilly days without compromising flavor
While Morioka reimen remains my gold standard, Ikkyu's version holds its own with thicker, satisfyingly chewy noodles that reminded me of Malaysia's best Hokkien Mee. The broth's delicate balance kept us sipping long after noodles disappeared.

The Michelin Touch

What earns Ikkyu its Michelin recognition? The meticulous craftsmanship:
  • Broth simmered for hours without shortcuts
  • Noodles with perfect bite and spring
  • Kimchi fermented to tangy perfection
  • Chaashu tender without excessive fat
We paid in cash (¥1,200-¥1,800 per person) and left completely satisfied, ready to explore Beppu's "Hells" with happy stomachs.

⏰
Hours: 11am - 3pm, 5pm-10pm (Closed 2nd Tuesday)
📞
Phone: +81952284132

Key Features

🥩
Cuisine: Michelin-starred Saga Wagyu
👨‍🍳
Experience: Wagyu Teppanyaki Dinner
🏆
Special: A5-grade Saga Beef with incredible marbling
💼
Atmosphere: Elegant, traditional Japanese setting with a hint of modern touch

Discovering Kira Saga

It was 7:15 PM on a Tuesday with no reservations. We didn't think this through as we were three hungry Malaysians road-tripping through Kyushu. After being turned away from our initial dining choice (because it was closed by the time we arrived after leaving Saga Castle History Museum), we desperately searched for nearby Saga beef restaurants.
Road Trip Tip: Always have backup dining options! When traveling between Kyushu cities, account for delays and restaurant closing times.
Our conversation went like this:
Me: "Girls do we want to indulge in wagyu tonight?"
Friend A: "Let's go!"
Me: "But this restaurant looks like it's gonna be way beyond our budget..."
Friend B: "Swipe the card let's go!"

And that's how we stumbled upon Kira Saga (佐賀牛レストラン 季楽 本店) like hungry zombies. With a 3.63 on Tabelog and over 4 stars on Google Maps, we decided to YOLO our way into this Michelin-starred experience.

Saga Beef: Wagyu Royalty

Saga Beef at Kira Honten
Each streak of marbling telling a flavorful story

The Overachieving Wagyu

Let's get one thing straight – Saga-gyu is the overachieving youngest sibling of Japan's wagyu dynasty. While Kobe beef gets all the fame, Saga beef burst onto the scene in 1988 with incredible standards:
  • Bloodline: Japanese Black × European stock
  • Standard: Beef Marbling Score ≥7/12
  • Diet: Zero-stress pastures with expert-designed meals
The result? Marbling so intricate it's earned its tsuya-sashi ("glossy fat") title - a distinction only 0.5% of Japan's beef achieves. At Kira, our tenderloin resembled cherry blossom petals suspended in snow.

The Dining Experience

Autumn Appetizer at Kira Honten
Seasonal appetizers: Squid, duck, mushroom, and heavenly tofu

From Appetizers to Dessert

Our dining experience at Kira unfolded like a culinary spectacle:
  • Zensai Moriawase: Four intricate appetizers including squid, duck, and tofu with unbelievable texture
  • Main Event: A5 Saga-gyu showcasing tenderloin and loin cuts
  • Intermezzo: Grilled seasonal vegetables
  • Finale: Dessert of cake and fruits with juice
The staff were incredibly attentive, answering all my questions about the food. When we noticed spiciness in one condiment, they even consulted the chef to confirm chili essence was used!

Teppanyaki Theater

Watching my friends transform our meal into an artistic performance was mesmerizing. The beef? Pure velvet that melted into a symphony of umami. The vegetables were excellent but clearly played second fiddle to the star of the show.
As the meal concluded, we noticed the Michelin plaque - explaining why every detail felt so perfect. The ¥26,400 bill (for three) initially shocked us, but we left with no regrets.

Wagyu Wars: Saga vs. The Contenders

Saga Beef

Kyushu's pride. Perfect marbling balance. Luxurious without being cloying. Our top choice!

Kobe Beef

The famous heavyweight. Rich and buttery, but at 120% the price of Saga.

Matsusaka Beef

Mie's darling. Incredibly tender with delicate sweetness. Like ballet vs. Saga's contemporary dance.

Hida Beef

Mountain-grown robustness. Earthier notes perfect for red wine pairings.

What We Loved

  • Exceptional A5 Saga Beef that melts in your mouth
  • Attentive, knowledgeable staff who answered all our questions
  • Beautiful traditional Japanese atmosphere
  • The teppanyaki sizzles added joy to the experience
  • Perfectly cooked meat with ideal marbling
  • Convenient parking right across the street
  • Worthwhile splurge for a special occasion

Considerations

  • Pricey (¥8,800 per person)
  • Reservations highly recommended (we got lucky)
  • Not ideal for budget travelers
  • Children under 10 not permitted at teppan counters
  • Can be challenging for non-Japanese speakers

Wagyu enthusiasts and food connoisseurs
Special occasions and celebrations
Those wanting authentic high-end Japanese dining

Consider elsewhere if
